Family Whānau Support Service

The Family Whānau support service can help you to understand mental illness and addiction by providing information and support on the ways that family members can respond, help, and keep well when the whole family is affected by mental illness and addiction.

Atareira’s main office is now located in Porirua, with satellite offices based in Wellington Central and Lower Hutt.  Our mobile workers cover all regions throughout Greater Wellington including Kapiti Coast, Upper Hutt and Wainuiomata.  We are able to work with families, individuals and groups in their own homes or communities.  We also facilitate family whānau support groups in each region.

Mental health and addiction problems do not occur in isolation. We are all part of communities with family whānau, neighbours, work colleagues and friends.

We believe that family whānau, with the right information and support, can help themselves to avoid or manage mental health and addiction issues, and manage the support of family whānau members who experience mental health and addiction issues.

One of the key functions of our services is to assist with health literacy, enhancing the understanding people have of the conditions their family whānau members are experiencing, and the health system that supports them.

Family Whānau Support for Children

‘Children Understanding Mental Illness’ Programmes

Atareira’s existing children’s programme incorporates the internationally recognised Children of Parents with Mental Illness or Addiction (COPMIA) programme. This programme promotes responsibility and understanding of the child’s and the family whānau group’s own health and wellbeing. The programme fosters an expectation of genuine community involvement for the children themselves and their family whānau.
